  • Solid Waste and Recycling Regulatory Update

  • Tuesday, November 22, 2011
  • 9:00 AM
  • Oceanic Plaza 1035 West Pender Street
  • Details

Metro Vancouver and its member municipalities are committed to diverting 70% of waste material from going to disposal. To accomplish this goal, local governments will be reinforcing the 3R's values with the implementation of new regulatory tools such as bylaws and material bans. Along with this, the provincial government is continuing to lead the nation with its Extended Producer Responsibility programs to place the burden of disposal of products back onto the manufacturers and distributors.

Property management companies are caught in the middle trying to meet the demands of their tenant for more recycling, controlling costs, and meeting regulatory requirements. We will discuss if this is a burden or it is an opportunity to raise the standard of the industry and bring better value to business.

Waste hauling and recycling service providers are under demand to provide a wider range of services including an expanded range of materials. But as a property manager where do you start? You will be shown how to set up a recycling program, what range of services are needed and available, where to site their collection areas, and who is responsible.

    Discussion Topics Include:

Regional solid waste regulatory update including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

Speaker: Craig Shishido, Metro Vancouver Solid Waste Department

Adding value to your business with extensive waste and recycling management

Speaker: Alison Kirk-Owen, Energy Management Specialist - Vancouver Properties, Cadillac Fairview

Procuring and setting up services and creating value for the increased cost

Speaker: Steve Caufield, Urban Impact Recycling
