Advocacy

Government Affairs

BOMA BC advocates to all levels of government for policies that allow the commercial real estate industry to succeed in our Province. Through meetings, advocacy, and consultations, we move the needle forward on key regulatory priorities such as climate change, permitting, property taxes and other issues

1) Permitting: Addressing permitting delays is a long-term advocacy priority for our association. BOMA BC encourages improvements to the permitting process for tenant improvements and processes relevant to existing buildings in the commercial real estate industry. While permitting delays are a challenge in every region, our steady advocacy has led to recent process improvements.

2) Property Taxes: BOMA BC is in regular contact with City of Vancouver staff to communicate the property tax burden on the cost of doing business. Consistent advocacy has encouraged Mayor and Staff to strike a Mayor’s Budget Task Force, and a Property Tax Review Commission to assess Vancouver’s property tax competitiveness.

3) Carbon Pollution Limits: In May 2022, the City of Vancouver passed Carbon Pollution limits for existing large commercial buildings. BOMA BC continues to work closely with the City of Vancouver, the Province, and other partners to ensure a smooth program rollout, hosting webinars, and sharing information with the membership. BOMA BC also works closely with utilities, the Province, and the City of Vancouver to ensure issues around data sharing and privacy are resolved.
